Workers' Compensation

Did you know that falls are the most common injury in an office? Something as innocuous as slipping on a spill in the office break room could lead to a fall, resulting in anything from a bruise to a broken bone to other serious injuries.

Accidents happen and they can happen anywhere at any time, even in the office. If you are injured on the job, you may be entitled to Workers' Compensation, a program provided through premiums paid fully by BB&T that provides benefits to associates for employment-related illnesses or injuries. Workers' Compensation is a legal obligation required of employers by state law. As such, the benefits granted will vary from state to state.

Workers' Compensation Incident Reporting
If you have an accident, or become ill or suffer an injury while at work, your manager must call CorVel, BB&T's Workers' Compensation administrator, at 877-764-3574. State and federal laws require all injuries be reported immediately upon knowledge of the accident, and your manager must report an incident whether or not you require medical treatment at the time of the incident. If you do require medical treatment at the time of the incident, you should participate with your manager in the call with CorVel. In certain states (North Dakota, Ohio, Washington and Wyoming) a different process applies. If you live in one of these states, please refer to the information provided on Human Systems Express.

For each reported incident, a CorVel nurse will record:

  • Your name
  • Your Social Security number
  • Your phone number
  • Date the incident occurred
  • A brief description of the injury

After gathering this information, the CorVel nurse will ask to speak with you to ensure you receive guidance on the appropriate care required. If you require medical treatment or time off from work as a result of the incident, CorVel will provide follow-up communications to your manager. In most instances, you will receive suggestions from CorVel about appropriate providers who treat Workers’ Compensation injuries in your area. Medical bills should be submitted to Corvel by the authorized treating provider.

Please Note: Medical bills for treatment of work-related injuries or illnesses cannot be submitted to BlueCross BlueShield.

Workers' Compensation Benefits
If your injury or illness is approved, you will be paid Workers' Compensation by CorVel based on a percentage of your average weekly rate of pay (calculations differ from state to state). A waiting period may be imposed by the state (waiting periods vary state by state). During any applicable waiting period, you may receive pay from your available Sick Pay balance. Once your injury or illness is approved, you will not be eligible for pay under the Sick Pay Policy related to that injury or illness.

If your injury or illness is not approved under Workers' Compensation guidelines, you may be eligible for Sick Pay, subject to the Sick Pay Policy.
