Smoking Cessation

Whether you picked up smoking recently or started decades ago, it's never too late to quit. People quit smoking every day. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), today there are more former smokers than there are smokers. Join their ranks and quit the habit!

Benefits of Quitting
Tobacco use is dangerous and damaging to your health. According to the CDC, "[tobacco] smoke contains a deadly mix of more than 7,000 chemicals—hundreds are harmful, and about 70 can cause cancer."1

There are plenty of reasons to quit smoking, such as lowering the risk of:

  • Lung and other cancers associated with smoking
  • Heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease
  • Respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath
  • Lung diseases
  • Infertility in women of childbearing age

Create Your Own Smoking Cessation Plan
If you decide to quit smoking, having a plan can help you cope with the physical and emotional effects of smoking cessation, including nicotine withdrawal and the strong urge to smoke. The following steps can help as you transition to a non-smoker:

  • Pick a day to quit.
  • Prepare for your "quit day" by talking with your primary care physician or healthcare provider to ensure quitting is safe for you. They can help you create a complete plan and prescribe any necessary smoking cessation medications.
  • Tell your friends, family and co-workers about your plan to quit so they can help support you on your journey to better health.
  • Throw away your cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products so you won't be tempted to use them. Stock up on gum, hard candy or crunchy vegetables for when you feel tempted to smoke.

Remember, quitting smoking is a marathon, not a sprint. The more resources you have to support you on your journey, the more likely you'll be able to stick with it and quit for good.
